23 May 2109 -- Day 15 -- Scenic Train Ride, Bergen to Oslo

Before we talk about the train ride we need to show you what Bergen looks like on a clear day!  We awoke to bright daylight and had to snap these pictures to show that Bergen does indeed have 9 mountains!

We boarded the train early, and left Bergen at 7:57am, for a 7-hour scenic train ride, with 68 other passengers from the Viking Sea, making 10 major city stops, Oslo being the last.

The Bergen Railway is 308 miles long, comprising of 182 tunnels (45 miles total length), 10 of which are over 1.2 miles long.  The Finse station is the highest elevated station at 4,010 feet, while the highest point on the rail line is in the Finse tunnel at 4,058 feet above sea level.

Our point of departure, Bergen Train Station, shown outside and inside

The first stop on the train was Dale (118 feet above sea level) -- 1200 inhabitants nestled on the west coast.  Beginning in 1879, the historic textile factory "Dale of Norway" was established

Voss ( 185 feet above sea level), at 15,000 inhabitants, is the 2nd largest municipality in the county after Bergen

Myrdal (2,844 feet above sea level) has no road connection and can only be reached by train.

Finse, 4,010 feet above sea level is the highest train station in Norway!  It was the most demanding rail construction project in all of Europe.

Glacier
Geilo (1, 432 feet above sea level) is primarily a ski resort town and has some of the most luxurious and expensive holiday cabins in Norway.
Nesbyen is 554 feet above sea level and you can step back in time and stroll among houses dating back to the 19th Century

Fla (509 feet above sea level)  offers many opportunities for outdoor adventure.  More and more Norwegians chose to build their cabin here and tourism continues to grow

The Honefoss Railway station (318 feet above sea level) has a Railway Club which restores, maintains railway equipment. The Norwegian Museum Trains has its operation here

Drammen (7 feet above sea level), a town of 93,00 people, makes it the 6th largest city in Norway. No other city in the country has received as many awards for environmental and urban development as Drammen.  It is also the main harbor for car and fruit import in Norway.

Our journey ends in Oslo and those pictures will be our next installment!

  1. Wow, it looks like you saved the best for last, John! Simply incredible. I wish I could comment on individual photos... certain ones are simply beautiful! I'm disappointed we won't be going through Norway. :(
